Donald Trump is scheduled to hold an outdoor rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, which will be his first campaign event outdoors since he was barely spared from an assassination attempt during an outdoor appearance a month ago.
US media reported that there will be increased security precautions for the afternoon rally scheduled at an aviation museum in Asheboro, North Carolina, with bulletproof glass surrounding the Republican nominee’s podium, as per security and campaign personnel.
The Secret Service advised Trump to refrain from hosting outdoor events after the agency responsible for protecting presidents and candidates failed to prevent a gunman from firing at Trump from a rooftop during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring him in the ear and killing one person in the crowd.
Trump has expressed his desire to return to open-air events in a public statement after holding roughly a dozen indoor rallies since the shooting. On July 31 he told supporters at an indoor arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that “we’re not giving up the outdoor rallies.”
The Secret Service has agreed to significantly increase its operation after Trump announced on social media that he would continue to hold open-air events days earlier.
The Secret Service is not typically involved in commenting publicly on security operations and does not respond to requests for confirmation of the use of bulletproof glass and other increased security tactics.
A source with firsthand knowledge of the security measures revealed that the protective detail has been preparing for President Trump to speak from behind a special see-through protective glass barrier in front of thousands of rally attendees in Asheboro on Tuesday.
According to the newspaper, the glass is identical to that used in the presidential limousine, which is also designed to shield passengers from gunfire.
The Trump rally in Asheboro is a counter-programming method. It comes on Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where security officials have set up a ring of steel around the gathering that formally names Kamala Harris as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee, after President Joe Biden exited the race.
The Republican National Convention that took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin just days after the assassination attempt was also a tight-lipped event.
The North Carolina Aviation Museum & Hall of Fame is where Trump and his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance will be taking the stage.
Photographs of bleachers that will accommodate thousands of guests have been posted by the museum, and its Facebook page relays guest instructions from the Trump-Vance campaign that the event will take place outside.
One of the swing states that are expected to determine the outcome of the November 5 election is North Carolina, which is located south of US.
